Medlycott joined the Turquoise at Callao, having sailed from Southampton to Panama on a mail steamer. The journals describe voyages along the South American coast, a Pacific cruise visiting the Marquesas, Tahiti, and the Hervey and Cook Islands, and the voyage to England via Cape Horn. The entries are detailed and refer to social events, native customs, clothes, houses and festivities, meetings with the Queen and Chiefs of Tahiti and with Governor Chessé, Admiral Du Petit-Thouars, consuls, missionaries and whalers, and attempts to extend the French protectorate in the Society Islands.
