Letters and papers received from abroad, 1850-1935

Component identifier:
Series D MSS
Extent:
108 items
Content Summary:
Despite the title of this series, many of the letters written to the secretaries and treasurers of the SPG were sent by individuals living in Britain. They included bishops, clergy, lay members and supporters of the SPG, government officials, and colonial bishops who were on leave in Britain or who had returned permanently to Britain. There are also letters from diocesan associations based in Britain, such as the Melanesian Mission and the Polynesian Diocesan Association. Nevertheless, the bulk of the letters, often accompanied by reports and other enclosures, were written by bishops, clergy, missionaries and lay people in British colonies and dominions and in a few other countries (such as the Netherlands, East Indies and Hawaii).
