The first chapter is titled 'The Lawfulness of King Henry the 8th, his Marriage with Queen Catherine, the Severall Impediments Annulled the Marriage of the said King with Anne Bullen and disabled their issue to the Succession of the Crowne of England, etc.' The manuscript is written in the author's original hand-writing in a fine clear hand with pages ruled into compartments of text and for cross references to other events of the time. Original limp vellum. Arms at the foot of the title leaf of the families of Brudenell quartering Tiaard, Annesty, Streete Reynes Borrard, Scudamour Leniston. 117 leaves.
Immediate source of acquisition:
The collection was purchased by the National Library of Australia from the estate of the 11th Baron Clifford in November 1963. It reached Canberra in April 1964. The Chertsey Cartulary (item 65), possibly the most important medieval manuscript held in Australia due to the fact that it is one of only three extant from the 14th century and the only one held outside the UK, was received in 1975, following the granting of an export licence by the British Government.
