This text was commissioned by the National Archives of Australia (NAA). It was meant to be the manuscript for the first in a series of small books for a general audience (for sale in bookshops) designed to showcase parts of the NAA collection which never eventuated. A slightly revised version of the text was published by the NAA in 2006 as In the Interest of National Security: Civilian Internment in Australia. It won a New South Wales Premier's History Award in 2007.
