Correspondence, 1934-1986
- Component identifier:
- Series 1
- Content Summary:
-
This series consists of personal and business correspondence including letters, birthday cards, Christmas cards, messages of congratulations, postcards and telegrams. There is a series of letters written to van Praagh's mother in 1945, while on tour in Europe with the Sadler's Wells Ballet, performing for the Allied Forces. Other correspondents include close friends such as Jay (John) Sweet, other dancers, dance organisations, government bodies and members of the public with an interest in ballet.
The correspondence has been arranged chronologically. Due to the amalgamation of the three instalments of papers there is a small degree of overlap with the dates as the original arrangement of files and their date range has been maintained.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The papers were donated to the National Library in four instalments in 1986, 1995, 1999 and 2001. The original instalment was donated by Peggy van Praagh. The additional instalments were forwarded by the executors of her estate.
