This series contains Nora Heysen's personal and professional correspondence. Apart from a few drafts and possibly unsent letters to family members, the only letters from Nora are to her husband Dr Robert Black. (Folder 1). Amongst the correspondence are clippings, drawings and poetry as well as photographic prints and postcards. A large number of Christmas cards and postcards are unsorted and have been placed together as Series 1, Subseries 7.
The bulk of the material comprises letters to Nora Heysen from her husband Dr Robert Black; her parents Hans and Sallie Heysen; and other family and friends, including a large series of correspondence from Steven Coorey.
Professional correspondence relating to Nora Heysen's art practice forms a small part of the series. These have been placed together as Series 1, Subseries 5. Some other professional correspondence is located among accounts and receipts in Series 2, Folder 4.
Three letters from Series 1, Subseries 1.3, Folders 36 and 37 have been digitised.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- Nora Heysen bequeathed the collection to the Library as part of the Heysen Trust in a single instalment in 2004, with the assistance of Lou Klepac, Nora Heysen's executor.
