Printed and roneoed material, c.1900-1952

Component identifier:
Series 11
Content Summary:

The series comprises mainly books, pamphlets, periodicals, bulletins and roneoed papers. There are 11 boxes (plus one folio item). The subject coverage is broad, but does not include those around which other series are formed. About a third of the series consists of books. Most relates to World War I (David Lloyd George's six volume War memoirs is here), Australian political history, England or Wales. There is also a variety of bulletins, circulars, other miscellaneous printed material and typescripts.

The bulletins and circulars include issues of Canberra Comment, Sane Democracy, Salt, Current Affairs Bulletin, The Palm, Graya Medical Journal of Australia, Ex-Nx, Things I Hear, London Tidings, Australian Business Conditions, Practical Patriot and Canberra Letter. Other printed material includes press releases issued by both government departments and interest groups, parliamentary papers, annual reports of clubs and associations such as the Returned Sailors Soldiers and Airmen's Imperial League of Australia, British Empire League circulars, and the Department of Information's weekly review of incoming short-wave news broadcasts. The latter, as well as bulletins issued by the United States Office of War Information, the Army activities bulletins of the Australian Military Forces and the Department of External Affairs political intelligence bulletins, are examples of the large amount of World War II material in the series.

The typescripts include reports by individuals seeking Hughes' support for various projects, such as Alfred Fry's 'Reconstruction of Australia' (May 1933) and H.C. Mallard's 'Geological report...' (1926).

Immediate source of acquisition:
The W. M. Hughes Papers were presented to the National Library of Australia by Dame Mary Hughes in 1953. The collection was received in two consignments. One consisted of papers taken from the Perpetual Trustee Company comprising material from Hughes' Lindfield home and from his office rooms at the Commonwealth Offices, Sydney; the other came directly from Lindfield. Lists of the contents of both consignments are held in the Library's Manuscript Branch. With the agreement of the executors and the Library, much of the collection, was for a time, held at the Australian National University by Fitzhardinge. He was permitted sole access to the collection while writing the biography Hughes commissioned in 1951. Fitzhardinge's own papers documenting the writing of the biography are also held by the Library (MS 5400). The papers transferred to the Library in 1953 are by no means the total collection of Hughes' personal papers, although it is impossible to say what proportion has survived. (see Fitzhardinge, p.936).
