The general correspondence of Herbert and Ivy Brookes, dating from 1877 until 1969 has been placed together, and arranged chronologically.
The letters cover a wide range of subjects: Herbert's work on the Victorian gold fields, his marriage to Jennie Strong, and her death, his friendship with Alfred Deakin, the courtship and marriage of Ivy Deakin and Herbert, family life and events, business interests, politics, conscription, the loyalist movement, women's affairs, the two World Wars, industry, broadcasting, music, art, literature, Melbourne University, rural matters, international affairs, conservation and religion. It should be noted that correspondence which refers to, but does not deal exclusively with, the subject-matter of the other series, has been placed in Series 1.
The principal correspondents are the Deakin and Brookes families, and friends and associates from the political, musical, academic and business world of Melbourne during the first half of the twentieth century.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The papers of Herbert Brookes were presented to the National Library in April 1967 by his widow Ivy Deakin Brookes. In October 1967 she deposited her own extensive collection, and together they form the Brookes Papers.
