Content Summary:
The series contain notes written by Herbert Brookes, some of them in five small books but mostly on loose paper. They record his childhood and years working on the goldfields in Victoria; contain records of meetings, and reflections on family and national events; drafts of speeches and typescript articles, including those concerning the socialist journalist H.H. Champion and the English lay-preacher Harry Drummond during the 1890's; notes on philosophy, religion and mysticism. Many are undated. Many other notes have been placed in relevant subject series.
Immediate source of acquisition:
The papers of Herbert Brookes were presented to the National Library in April 1967 by his widow Ivy Deakin Brookes. In October 1967 she deposited her own extensive collection, and together they form the Brookes Papers.
