Herbert Brookes, with his brothers and sisters, inherited three pastoral properties in central Queensland. They retained their ownership under the name of William Brookes and Co. until their sale in 1964. This large series includes business correspondence from 1921 until 1961 with the manager, E. Bayliss, the solicitors Cannan and Peterson, and with Dalgety and Co. Ltd, and the Queensland Primary Producers' Co-operative Association Ltd, all of Brisbane.
In 1929 Brookes, in partnership with K. Mitchell, T. Lyle, and P. Cresswell purchased Granite Peak Station at Wiluna, W.A., and this subseries contains their business correspondence, monthly with K. Mitchell, the manager from 1920 until 1963.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The papers of Herbert Brookes were presented to the National Library in April 1967 by his widow Ivy Deakin Brookes. In October 1967 she deposited her own extensive collection, and together they form the Brookes Papers.
