- There are notices of meetings, agenda and minutes from the Secretary F.L. Ashby during the years from 1913 until 1917 when Brookes was President of the Chamber of Manufactures of Victoria. During 1917 and 1918 he was President of the Associated Chambers of Manufactures of Australia. Minutes of meetings, reports, speeches, notes, printed matter and press cuttings are also included. The series contains material on a number of issues which concerned the Chambers. The include the coal strikes of 1916 and 1920, the moulders' dispute of 1917, contracts of the Department of Defence during World War I, suggested schemes for profit-sharing and co-partnership in 1919, and the Standard Hours Case (44 hours) before the Arbitration Court in 1926.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The papers of Herbert Brookes were presented to the National Library in April 1967 by his widow Ivy Deakin Brookes. In October 1967 she deposited her own extensive collection, and together they form the Brookes Papers.
