Content Summary:

Brookes was a member of the Tariff Board from its inception in March 1922 until 1928. The series is small but contains correspondence with S.M. Bruce, W. Leitch, R. McK. Oakley, D. Masterton and others concerning administrative and policy decisions of the Board, including the galvanized iron industry, 1925, duties on iron and steel in 1926, power alcohol in 1926, trade with New Zealand, with reference to dried fruits in 1926, and the Newnes State Works in 1927. There are also papers concerning the unsuccessful libel writ issued by Brookes in 1924 against R.G. Nial Ltd; an address by R.C. Mills in 1926 entitled The Tariff Board of Australia; printed material including the Board's report of 1925 on Agricultural Implements, and press cuttings.

Reference to the Tariff Board is also made in Series 24 which deals with Brookes' attendance at the Imperial Economic Conference in London as one of the advisers to the Australian Delegation.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The papers of Herbert Brookes were presented to the National Library in April 1967 by his widow Ivy Deakin Brookes. In October 1967 she deposited her own extensive collection, and together they form the Brookes Papers.
