- The series comprises messages received by the Brookes when Herbert was appointed Commissioner-General to the U.S.A. in May 1929; copies of official communications from Brookes to Prime Ministers Bruce (until October 1929) and Scullin (from October 1929), semi-official and personal correspondence during 1929 and 1930, concerning arrangements for their official and social engagements, world economic conditions, trade, music, art, medicine, education and travel; notes on events, and places visited, speeches, Ivy's desk calendar for 1930, lists of introductions, programmes, visiting cards, and many press cuttings.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The papers of Herbert Brookes were presented to the National Library in April 1967 by his widow Ivy Deakin Brookes. In October 1967 she deposited her own extensive collection, and together they form the Brookes Papers.
