Herbert Brooks, Meredith Atkinson and Sir James Barrett formed the first committee of the Chautaugua Association in Australia in 1921. Its objects were "to provide civic educational and social advancement throughout the Commonwealth by organizing and conducting Chautauguas, the programmes consisting of entertainment given by lecturers, entertainers and musical artists of professional ability".

There is correspondence dating from 1921 between Brookes, H.M. Lee, C. Callow, E.R. Peacock, concerning the formation and administration of the association and Brookes' resignation in 1924 during his term as President. There are also notes and printed material, including programmes and Chautaugua News (N.Z.) No.1 July 1922.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The papers of Herbert Brookes were presented to the National Library in April 1967 by his widow Ivy Deakin Brookes. In October 1967 she deposited her own extensive collection, and together they form the Brookes Papers.
