This series contains papers collected by the Brookes for the use of biographers of Ivy's father, Alfred Deakin. Theye were made available to Walter Murdoch for his Alfred Deakin - a sketch published in London in 1923; to J.A. La Nauze for Alfred Deakin : a biography, published by Melbourene University Press in 1965, and were used by Herbert Brookes when he edited Deakin's own The Federal Story; the inner history of the federal cause, 1880-1900, which was first published by Robertson and Mullens in 1944, (a second edition, edited and introduced by J.A. La Nauze, was published by Melbourne University Press in 1963).
The papers include letters received by Brookes in 1919 and 1920 in response to requests in the press for personal reminiscences of Deakin, a scrap-book containing typescript notes by Brookes, manhy press cuttings, and entries in the Grand Eisteddfod (South Street Ballarat) in 1920 for an essay entitled Alfred Deakin, his life and work.
The series also contains correspondence with Murdoch (1919-1936) La Nauze (1951-61), Robertson and Mullens, and Melbourne University Press.
Placed at the end of the series is a small amount of correspondence in 1966 between the Australian Broadcasting Control Board and Ivy Brookes concerning the ABC television series "Mister Prime Minister" which included a program devoted to Alfred Deakin.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The papers of Herbert Brookes were presented to the National Library in April 1967 by his widow Ivy Deakin Brookes. In October 1967 she deposited her own extensive collection, and together they form the Brookes Papers.
