Series 49
Content Summary:
Arthur Lucas taught science and mathematics at Wesley College Melbourne from 1883 to 1892 and among his pupils was Herbert Brookes. In 1893 he moved to Sydney to become headmaster of Newington College, and later, in 1921, of Sydney Grammar School. During this time he became a recognised authority on sea-weeds. In 1924-25 he was Acting Professor of Mathematics at the University of Tasmania. There are a small number of letters from Lucas during the period 1921 to 1936; most concern his work and his interest in sea-weeds. The series also contains the manuscript of the autobiography A.H.S. Lucas : his own story, published posthumously by Angus and Robertson in 1937, Brookes' correspondence with Angus and Robertson, and Lucas' poems and articles, including The Caulerpas of Victoria (1931) and The marine algae of Lord Howe Island (1935).
Immediate source of acquisition:
The papers of Herbert Brookes were presented to the National Library in April 1967 by his widow Ivy Deakin Brookes. In October 1967 she deposited her own extensive collection, and together they form the Brookes Papers.
