Aviators and aviation history, 1784-1986
- Component identifier:
- Series 2
- Content Summary:
-
A mix of material created by Crome, given to him by aviators and families of aviators, or acquired from dealers. Much of the material relates to Charles Kingsford Smith, including some original correspondence. Many papers relate to the search for Kingsford Smith after his disappearance in 1935, and memorialising activities.
Australian aviators Charles Ulm, Walter Shiers, David Manwell, and G U 'Scotty' Allan are also represented.
Due to its size and the varied subjects and types of material, the series has been arranged using subseries. Following Crome's collecting priority and the 1970 list of the collection, Kingsford Smith is the first subseries, followed by Ulm, then other aviators (arranged alphabetically), early aviation history and maps. Within subseries or subject groupings, files are arranged chronologically.
Papers relating to the Southern Cross airplane and Coffee Royal incident are grouped with Kingsford Smith material, although they do also relate to Ulm. Papers relating to the Faith in Australia are grouped with Charles Ulm papers.
When the collection was first processed in 1970 this series was listed in some detail. Since 1970 the series expanded considerably and most of the papers were not described. The original folders have been left intact although given new folder numbers. References for the old folder numbers, and the original 1970 list are available upon request.
