Philately, 1811-c.1993
- Component identifier:
- Series 5
- Content Summary:
-
This series represents the focus of Crome's collecting activity and the core of his collection. It comprises aerophilatelic items such as stamped envelopes (airmail covers), as well as letters, ephemera and photographs.
Albums 1-50 are in security binders, having been sorted and rehoused from their original order by a contract and volunteer staff member, Tom Frommer, in the late 1980s and 1990s. Albums 51-85 are in their original albums.
Only the Australian and Papua and New Guinean airmail albums 1-19 and 26-27 have been described in detail. A hard copy catalogue was compiled in 1989 by Mr Frommer. The catalogue lists the album number of the item; the catalogue number in Nelson Eustis' Air mail catalogue; the type of item (such as cover, postcard, leaflet); airline; description of plane; pilot/s; number flown/rarity; and significance of flight.
This list has been partially transcribed (albums 1-19) to spreadsheet format and is available in the reading room or electronically on request. Mr Frommer's list is available in hard copy only, on request.
Albums 20-23 and 48-49 are empty. They were prepared during the project in the late 1980s and were not filled.
Albums 28-85, mostly overseas philatelic material, have not been described in detail.
Albums 86-90 are original large screw binders from which some items in the series were removed. The original items have been removed and reorganised in the main run of this series, but references to new numbers have been annotated in most cases. The original arrangement was subject-based, the new arrangement is similar but with a greater focus on flights.
Folders 91-127 were originally in six boxes which were identified as being part of the philatelic collection, but as duplicate or unsorted items. This material has been placed in folders and arranged chronologically.
