Kent Hughes enlisted in the AIF and left Australia with the Australian Light Horse for the Middle East (Sinai, Palestine, Syria and Gallipoli) on 18 October 1914.
The series includes certificates of appreciation for gallant and distinguished service in the field, notes and correspondence relating to Kent Hughes' discharge from the AIF and non-military employment. His letters to his family can be found in Series 1 and the WW I photographs are in Series 4.

- The collection was donated to the National Library, in several instalments between 1973 and 1991, by Lady Kent Hughes and her daughters, Mrs Janet Derham, Mrs Margaret Sasse and Dr Mary Lou Sheil.
