Kent Hughes served in the 8th Division, AIF in 1940. He went to Malaya in 1941, where he became a Lieutenant-Colonel in 1941 and Colonel in 1942. He was taken Prisoner of War on 16 February 1942 and was in camps in Changi (18 months), Formosa (2 years), Japan (2 weeks) and Manchuria (1 year) until 1945. The series includes correspondence, notes and drafts of various writings about the camps.
