Following his resignation from Victorian politics, Kent Hughes stood as a Liberal candidate and won the Federal seat of Chisholm in December 1949. He held the seat until his death in 1970. He was the Federal Minister for the Interior and Works between 1951 and 1956.
The series mostly comprises papers on a wide range of subjects that Kent Hughes received as a Federal Parliamentarian. They include both incoming and outgoing correspondence with other politicians, Cabinet Ministers and his constituents and with a wide range of acquaintances in Australia, Asia and other overseas countries. There are also files on Australian defence and foreign policy and relation with Asian countries and communism. Papers relating to Kent Hughes' work as a Minister can be found in Series 12 and papers on the Joint Foreign Affairs Committee are in Series 17.
The papers had been kept in files and, wherever possible, the Library has preserved the arrangement of the papers within them and also the file titles.

- The collection was donated to the National Library, in several instalments between 1973 and 1991, by Lady Kent Hughes and her daughters, Mrs Janet Derham, Mrs Margaret Sasse and Dr Mary Lou Sheil.
