Content Summary:

The Morgan Guaranty Trust was established about 1957. It was the result of the amalgamation of two old established Companies, J.P. Morgan and Co. and the Guaranty Trust Company of New York.

The Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York is a bank engaged in strong domestic and world wide activities; such as underwriting the securities of governments and corporations especially since World War I. It was first American commercial bank to establish a branch office overseas (in London in 1897). The Bank is engaged in deposit and investment banking, and is the trustee of funds totalling many billions of dollars. A branch office has been established in Sydney.

Against this background of investment and commercial business, the Board of the Morgan Trust Company put an emphasis on their executive bankers becoming "banking generalists" - men who could see the client's problems and make intelligent judgements, making wise use of specialized resources. Thus was founded the International Council of the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York. Nineteen members were chosen from overseas business, banking and political interests with Lord Shawcross as Chairman, together with the Board of the Company. The first meeting was held in November 1967.

Menzies accepted the invitation to become a member of this Council, and from the time of attending his first meeting in New York in 1968 until his resignation because of ill-health in 1973, made valuable contributions to the group.

The three boxes of files contain correspondence, both business and personal, with some detail of the financial arrangements of his visits to the United States.

There are economic and financial reports on various countries and the implications of political change, also special news bulletins from the Morgan Trust, and booklets on a variety of topics and world affairs.
