Folklore activities and publications, 1948-2001
- Component identifier:
- Series 20
- Content Summary:
- Andrews' involvement in the folk revival was not limited to dance. She was a founding member of the Victorian Bush Music Club (which later changed its name to the Victorian Folk Music Club (VFMC)), the founder and editor of Australian Tradition, the VFMC newsletter, a founding member of the Victorian Folklore Society, the Folk Song and Dance Society of Victoria (FSDSV), the chairperson of the First National Folk Festival in Melbourne in 1968 and the Convenor of the Program Committee for the first National Folklore Conference in 1984. Not all Andrews' roles in the folk movement are represented in this series of correspondence, notes, photographs, newsletters, posters, songbooks (including Freedom songs published by the Eureka Youth League) and other publications, mainly dating from the 1960s-80s. The small collection of photographs includes some of Andrews with Kevin Bradley, Ron and Ann Edwards, Alan Scott and Keith and Jenny McKenry in Kuranda, Queensland. Some related correspondence may be found in Series 12.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- Shirley Andrews bequeathed her papers to Wendy Lowenstein and Lucy Stockdale. The papers were purchased by the Library from Lowenstein and Stockdale in 2002 and 2003 respectively. The audio-visual material held in the Oral History Section was received in 2005 from Stockdale.
