Content Summary:
Notes and references from nineteenth-century newspapers, and press cuttings, correspondence and articles (1950-76) relating to the influence of western customs and society and the history of Tokyo in the context of the foreign settlements. Comparisons with the Japan of the 1960s to the 1980s are sometimes included in press cuttings. There are two pamphlets; one an illustrated tourist pamphlet relating to the 1964 Olympic Games, entitled Tokyo Invites, published by the Organizing Committee for the Games of the Eighteenth Olympiad; the other a pamphlet in Japanese and English entitled Oriental Goddess (1974-75), by Japanese businesswoman Mama Ginbasha.
Immediate source of acquisition:
Harold and Gertrude (Jean) Williams between 1978 and 1995 donated the collection to the Library in numerous instalments. Further material was added in 2002 and 2005.
