The first British doctor in Japan, who arrived c.1862 as medical officer for the British Legation.

Correspondence, photocopies from Japanese microfilm (1982-83) and a typescript of a speech by Sir Hugh Cortazzi in 1983.

Immediate source of acquisition:
Harold and Gertrude (Jean) Williams between 1978 and 1995 donated the collection to the Library in numerous instalments. Further material was added in 2002 and 2005.
