Photographs

Component identifier:
Series 5
Content Summary:

This first consignment of material in this series contains 36 photograph albums: Albums numbers 1-24, 29-30, and 33-42, as numbered by Harold Williams. The original album number is shown on the list with the prefix HSW, followed by the numbers of the photographs in that album.

Material was added to this series in September 2005: 11 albums and a photograph. Originally numbered by donor, they are now numbered chronologically as much as possible. The number in brackets after the date is the one which appears on the spine. Items in this addition to Series 5 are identified by Vol/Piece Folder numbers only, and Folio numbers have been discontinued.

There are no albums, 25 - 28, or 31 - 32, in the Collection.

Albums numbers 1-20, 22-24, 29-30, and 33-42 have been microfilmed and are on microfiche at McG 4244/1-202. A separate listing is attached (see the Related Documentation tab). There is an index to Album 21 but no record of it having been microfilmed.

An index to the photograph albums is in Series 11/3, Indexes to Photographs. Each album has a list of photographs inside the front cover. Some albums have subject indexes to individual photographs. The photographs include original photographs, photographs of press cuttings and photographs of paintings and drawings. There are a few original wood engravings.

The rest of the series contains individual photographs, stereoscopic and aerial views, duplicate photographs and negatives of photographs in the albums and of other material in the collection.

Immediate source of acquisition:
Harold and Gertrude (Jean) Williams between 1978 and 1995 donated the collection to the Library in numerous instalments. Further material was added in 2002 and 2005.
