Post New Guinea, 1953-1988

Component identifier:
Series 8
Content Summary:
Black 'went finish' in 1953. He returned to his home state, South Australia and settled on a family property near Maitland in the wheat belt of Yorke Peninsula. He maintained his deep interest in Papua New Guinea, and returned for visits in 1972 and 1975, and at the time of his death on 6 April 1988 he was planning another trip later that year to coincide with the re-walk of the Hagen-Sepik Patrol. After his wife's death in 1986 he spent more time in Adelaide working on his papers in an office made available to him at the South Australian Museum Annexe. His 'work in progress' included autobiographical excerpts and an article on sorcery.
Immediate source of acquisition:
MS 8346 was bequeathed to the Library by John Black in 1988. At the request of the family, to enable Robin Radford to complete her research, it remained in Adelaide until 1992. In 1999 Dr Bill Gammage added a substantial collection of photographs taken on the Hagen-Sepik Patrol of 1938-39. They have been placed in Series 3. Further papers were received in 2011.
