Consignment added 2011

Component identifier:
Class MS Acc11.096
Content Summary:

Comprises a collection of negatives and photographs taken in Papua New Guinea that were separated from the initial instalment of Black's papers when they were transferred to the National Library in 1992. Some of the photographs appear to be taken by Black during his time as a Patrol Officer with the Hagen-Sepic Patrol, including at Finintegu, and some appear to be taken by others who were also in PNG at this time, including Pat Walsh and Michael Leahy. Packets include notations by researcher Robin Radford. Included are images of shipping, scenes in Rabaul prior to World War II, and German missionaries. There are also postcards written in Japanese that appear to be from the occupation of PNG dating from circa 1942.

Contained in 7 boxes and 1 album.

Immediate source of acquisition:
MS 8346 was bequeathed to the Library by John Black in 1988. At the request of the family, to enable Robin Radford to complete her research, it remained in Adelaide until 1992. In 1999 Dr Bill Gammage added a substantial collection of photographs taken on the Hagen-Sepik Patrol of 1938-39. They have been placed in Series 3. Further papers were received in 2011.
