There are nearly 300 letters in this series. They were written almost every week, each generally six handwritten pages or more, and describe Cleland's activities and experiences during World War II, though confined within censorship rules. The couple exchanged views on the progress of the war, politics, and discussed books they were reading, as well as family matters, and the growth of their two sons.
