- Dame Rachel was active in a number of local and Western Australian matters of public interest. She became a prison visitor, joined the move to free Lindy Chamberlain, became patron of the York Society, took part in the Indian Ocean Arts Festivals, and was interested in conservation matters and aboriginal affairs. She was also a popular speaker at various functions, and a number of her speeches are available. She frequently wrote short articles, some for publication, about matters that concerned her, and was herself often interviewed by journalists.
