During the course of his career, Penberthy 's writing encompassed a variety of genres including journalism, poetry, radio scripts, academic papers and autobiography. This series comprises printed and draft versions of these writings, not all of which were published. Drafts of unpublished works include two books entitled 'The computer composes' and 'New methods in music education' (c 1984), the draft of Penberthy's untitled autobiography and drafts of his poems. There are drafts of papers presented by Penberthy and scripts he wrote for programs in the ABC series 'Music for the music lovers'.

Penberthy wrote a great number of newspaper articles and copies are included in this series. In a letter dated 23 Sep 1970 Penberthy laments 'My problem is that I am forced to work at journalism writing articles that have nothing to do with music.' At this time he was writing for The Sunday Times, Perth, as both its music critic and as the television critic 'Monitor', as well as ghost writing a column on Australian Rules Football for local football identity John K. Watts.

In the late 1970s Penberthy wrote a column called 'Tone and semitones' for The Northern Star in Lismore, New South Wales. Typescript copies of drafts of his articles are included in this series.
