Presentation copy: "This book is inscribed with kind regards to Harry F. Chaplin from the poet's son, Frank Neilson, Merbein, 23 August 1958".
Inserted: Autograph letter (2pp.) from Frank Neilson to James Devaney (2 September 1938) which relates to errors in the typescript of the poems. Refers to Shaw Neilson: "He wishes me to write to you about the errors you have noticed in the typescript. He feels very tired in the evenings. The constant work he follows is rather too much for him now. He needs a long spell...John seems to like 'Found in the Forest' well. Father here seems to have gathered up those poor bones respectfully and wrapped them in a mantle of emotion. One time father had a narrow escape from perishing in the little desert when doing a contract of fencing...he and his mates were two days without water...What do you think of 'Damper' - he has cooked it rather well has he not?...John and I have for a long time had the idea in view of printing father's poems. It now seems to be realised."
Also inserted: Letter (2pp.) from Shaw Neilson to J.K. Moir (25 September 1938) written at dictation by Frank Neilson, and signed "J.S. Neilson".
Neilson wished the copies to be numbered, and in another letter to J K. Moir suggested that copies Nos. 1-40 should be his own, Nos. 41-55 Frank Neilson's, and the balance divided between J.K.M. and the publisher. He also wanted the copies to go out "with the Publisher's compliments", and intended signing only the copies for J.K. Moir, James Devaney, and John Gartner.
