Item 6
Content Summary:

Autograph letter, 3pp, written by Frank Neilson to James Devaney, dated 10 March 1935. He writes of his mother and sends her portrait. She is shown nursing Shaw Neilson upon her knee. The poet was at that time two years old. "...It was after mother was gone that Dad wrote 'The Last Time'. A.G.S. was always most impressed with this poem." Later in his letter he refers to the latter: "It is pleasing to note that some of the critics write that even if Australia has not yet produced the great poet, it has produced the great critic." Writing to Shaw Neilson, 2 February 1919, A.G.S. says: "...I hope your father is well. You might tell him when you write to him that I think his poem 'The Last Time' is fine; it touches me deeply." (This letter is in the H.F. Chaplin collection.)

In his preface to Heart of Spring, A.G.S. made reference to this poem, and also printed it in full. The poem is also included in The Men of the Fifties. Mrs Elizabeth Neilson's photograph is included, also other photographs, and items of Neilson interest.

All tipped into light board folder.
