Item 45
Content Summary:

Inserted: Autograph letter from Shaw Neilson to his brother Frank, 12 February 1922, from Yallourn. 4pp. "...It would be nice to see you and get away from the constant beer talk...I notice that Hebblethwaite is dead. He was a beautiful character and wrote beautifully in splendid English. His generation was too stupid to appreciate him. I think his best quatrains are almost as good as anything in our language. I would like to see Murdoch's review of Alma Venus. O'Dowd is, I suppose, going back. His work as a draughtsman has been against him as a writer. We should all be proud of O'Dowd. He is so far above the crowd, but so tolerant and kindly all through. His Socialism is merely his fierce hatred of injustice."

Script of poem The Happy Thief printed at page 19 of this book, copied by Lisette Neilson, but signed "Shaw Neilson".
