Component identifier:
Item 49-50
Content Summary:

A Bread and Cheese Club publication. Foreword by J.K. Moir. Biographical note by R.H. Croll. This is a collection of tributes to Neilson from his many friends and admirers. Two copies, as follows.

(a) Original wrappers. E.J. Brady's own copy, on the end paper of which he has written a long annotation, relating to his meeting with the poet at the Country Roads Board office. He suggested to the poet that this appointment should not preclude him from writing some more verse, but Neilson replied: "I do not seem to want to. I'm afraid I have exhausted myself - no more inspiration". Of Neilson Brady writes: "His output is relatively small but entirely precious". Inserted in this copy is the script of poem Golden Fugitive: To a Departing Smoker Parrot, printed on page 24 of Beauty Imposes. The script has been written by Lisette Neilson but is signed "Shaw Neilson". This book contains poem The Smoker Parrot, printed on page 18. A third poem to the parrot is also published in Unpublished Verses upon page 32. This bird had much attraction for Neilson.

(b) Full morocco over original wrappers preserved. Inserted are autograph letters from Frank Neilson, R.H. Croll and two dictated letters from the poet to J.K. Moir, signed "J.S. Neilson". In one of the letters to Moir, Neilson writes: "I must take this opportunity of thanking you for your many acts of kindness towards me during the last few years. I understand that I will be alright for my job for another year. All good wishes for Xmas and New Year". This dated 20 December 1939.
