Southerly: "Shaw Neilson" Number. Edited by R.G. Howarth, 1956

Component identifier:
Item 54
Content Summary:

Inscribed by Frank Neilson to H.F. Chaplin. Tipped onto frontispiece portrait is typed stanza from Love's Coming, autographed "John Shaw Neilson".

This copy has been specially annotated by Frank Neilson for H.F.C. He has added typewritten slips lightly tipped onto relevant passages correcting certain inaccuracies and misconceptions on the part of contributors. His notes include many useful commentaries and there is much new information for students and research workers.

Inserted: Neilson's original manuscript of Mandrels All, printed at page 16. This is accompanied by photograph of drawing made by Frank Neilson to illustrate the poem. Neilson's poor opinion of his fellow workers is similar to that of Henry Lawson, who told his friend J. Le Gay Brereton, "Believe me Jack, the Australian worker is a brute". Script of Summer Girl, one of Neilson's early Bulletin appearances, December 1908, copied out by Lisette Neilson and signed "Shaw Neilson", together with Norman Lindsay's illustration, clipped from the paper. Autograph letters from Frank Neilson to H.F. Chaplin, with references to this magazine, and much of Neilson family interest, together with copies of letters from H.F.C. to Frank Neilson. Photographs and other items of Neilson association are included.

Bound in quarter-morocco.
