Component identifier:
Item 58
Content Summary:

The petticoat plays; Green singer; Irish welcome; As far as my heart; Old violin.

The original scores of the above songs in the composer's autograph. Inscribed: "These five songs, composed by me to Shaw Neilson's poems, in the writer's presence in 1941, are presented to Harry F. Chaplin as collector's pieces with my compliments. The second verse of 'Old Violin' was written by me at Neilson's request. His comment: 'Its better than mine!' Frank C. Francis, 27.6.62.

Bound up in folder together with letters from the composer to H.F. Chaplin. In one he writes: "They [the songs] are simply composed, of course, but they seemed to please Neilson and it was fun trying to fit tunes suitable to the spirit of the words. When I told him a second verse for 'Old Violin' would be necessary, he said he had lost the mood, and was quite sure I could write one myself, which I did, with many misgivings. However, he seemed to be satisfied with it, remarking, 'Its better than mine!' so I felt that he had, to some extent, caught the mood."

Included also is interesting letter from James Devaney to H.F. Chaplin. Other items of interest are also included.
