Shaw Neilson's Light verse

Component identifier:
Item 59
Content Summary:

A small selection of the poet's lighter verses, along with a number of his limericks. These have been copied by James Devaney into a small exercise book.

Among the poems is To Susette, a pleasant little set of verses, believed to have been written by the poet to Florence Case (later Mrs Spencer) at the time she was in the Post Office at Sea Lake. Other versions on the same theme exist: one is sub-titled, To a Letter Carrier, another Saucy Susette.

Tipped in with the above are some typed extracts from letters by Frank Neilson to James Devaney in which the lines are described as "flapper-worship stuff". Neilson writing to James Devaney, 10 August 1935, says that these verses were written in 1911.

The book is bound in quarter-leather, together with other items of interest.
