Shaw Neilson's autobiography
- Component identifier:
- Item 61
- Content Summary:
-
This is written in the form of a series of letters to James Devaney. The first two letters are missing; they were amongst other letters and papers stolen whilst Devaney was working on his biography of Neilson. Fortunately, the contents had been noted for inclusion, and the only loss suffered was to rob the series of complete continuity. Neilson's story begins with his arrival at Nhill in June 1889 and continues to 1934.
The gist of Neilson's story is contained in Devaney's book. He has included everything of major importance. He could have elaborated upon some of Neilson's experiences but the war-time restrictions imposed upon publishing made some curtailment necessary. A number of unpublished passages have been selected and added as annotations to certain items listed in this catalogue, where they have interest and relevance.
The letters have been hand-written at dictation by Annie McKimm, and Lisette Neilson, but are signed "J.S. Neilson". As written prose the book reads well. Neilson's style is clear and direct. There are in all 287 pages.
The letters have been bound in green quarter-morocco together with letters from James Devaney to H.F. Chaplin. A number of photographs of Neilson and members of his family, have been included.
