Item 12
Content Summary:

A collaboration by G.G. Nicholson and C.J. Brennan.

The essay at page 34, "A Regular Hash" by "A Foreign Observer" was in fact by Brennan. The authority for this attribution is J.J. Quinn. It has been confirmed by Dr Margaret Clarke.

This book was formerly the property of J.J. Dennehy. His name is on the end paper, dated January 1917. The book has been used for study, and has many notes and scorings in the text.

Tipped in is a short autograph note from Brennan to A.G. Stephens, introducing Mr Jagelmann, "who is inexperienced of publisher's ways and came to me seeking the light. May I refer him to you? Chris: Brennan". There is an annotation on the note by A.G.S., who has also dated it as having been received in 1899.

A writer in the Sydney Morning Herald commenting upon Prose, 1962, criticised Professor Chisholm for the inclusion of this essay, giving as his reason that it added nothing to Brennan's stature, and inferred that Brennan would perhaps have preferred its exclusion. Why? Brennan had an abundant sense of humour.
