Autograph Letter to A.G. Stephens 1p. 4to

Component identifier:
Item 21
Content Summary:

Brennan writes from Mosman, dating his letter 5 January 1914, instead of 1915. He made this mistake with a number of his presentation copies of Poems, dating them back into 1914, when they were presented early in 1915.

In quarter-leather folder, together with other relevant material. Included is copy of very long letter from Brennan to A.G.S., 16 February 1916. Brennan replies to criticism of his verses by Arthur Adams, and Dowell O'Reilly. "...you and Dowell are good chaps blokes coves and whatnot, and add considerably to the human good-fellowship of this varied hash called life - whereof I mean to have many a plateful yet: it's a good mixed feeding. [C.B. was a reader of Kipling and probably took this phrase from the author, as he did also for Burden of Tyre which echoes Kipling in places.] As for myself, I won't say I'm a good chap, but anyway I'm going to stick alongside 'good old Mallarmé. And Lionel Lindsay is the best of us all...as for Arthur Adams, he means well: he'd be a lady if he could...I'm here working at the first of three works in scholarship with which I mean to prove Dowell right. It is the season of harvest. And after that - at the ripe age of 45...I'm going to fly in the face of physiology and A.G.S. starting at the point where my climb left off (guess!) carry the banner with the strange device into Poems: Second Series: and you must be alive and there..."
