"Baudelaire"

Component identifier:
Item 40
Content Summary:

Autograph manuscript. 2pp only. The concluding portion of Brennan's essay, "The Lazaretto of Romanticism: Charles Baudelaire", which appeared in the Bookfellow, April 1899.

Written upon the blank reverse of sheet from the library catalogue. Many of Brennan's notes thereon, one of which alongside the subject heading Eternal Punishment, is "Hell?". The interrogation mark indicated that Brennan had some reservations on the matter.

This script contains Brennan's translation of poem, "Recuillement", as it was printed in the magazine. Later he wrote another essay upon Baudelaire, which appeared in the Bookfellow, published by A.G.Stephens, in February 1920. In this essay Brennan slightly revised the poem, there being a minor variation in the final lines. As both essays were included in Prose, 1962 the variant texts can be compared. Upon the verso of his script Brennan has written a short note to A.G.S. He refers to a portrait of Coppee, by Vallatton, which he suggests might do for his "Parnasse" article, and offers also, to send some caricatures. The portrait Brennan described was printed by A.G.S. in the Bookfellow, May 1899.

The manuscript is tipped into quarter-leather folder, together with 2 original etchings of Baudelaire by Manet. One is a full face portrait; the other depicts the poet in profile, slightly caricatured. Both are superb prints.

Also with the above is: Charles Baudelaire: by Felie Gautier. The rare supplement to La Plume, 1903. 95pp, tall 8vo. Illustrated with portraits of Baudelaire, reproductions of his drawings, and manuscripts in facsimile. Originally A.G. Stephen's copy, bound in his customary green silk cloth. Later the property of Lionel Lindsay, with his name on end paper, accompanied by some comments upon A.G.S. and notes written in French.

Tipped into this book is autograph letter from Lionel Lindsay to Hugh McCrae, 2pp. n.d. [1909]
