"Secreta Silvarum: the Lair"

Component identifier:
Item 42
Content Summary:

Autograph manuscript. 2pp. 4to

The poem, "The forest hides it's horrors, as the sea:" Some foxing on the sheets and indications of its being a very early draft. Minor variations from the text printed in Verse, 1960.

In quarter-leather folder, together with autograph letter from Brereton to O'Reilly, 4pp, 8vo, n.d.

Accompanying the above are 2 autograph letters from O'Reilly to Brereton, 3pp, November 1913. O'Reilly complains very bitterly about Brennan's conduct towards him. He speaks of the earlier days of their friendship, and that Brennan then encouraged him with his verses. Now he finds Brennan changed, not so much to him personally but to his work at which he loses no chance to sneer. O'Reilly is hurt by Brennan's "clumsy ridicule". One incident related by O'Reilly reveals Brennan as a not very acute critic and easily fooled by lines wrongly attributed. Although O'Reilly writes with great feeling, the breach was only temporary. Included also is autograph letter from Brennan to Lionel Lindsay. Written from Mosman, not dated.

Note. "The Bush and - Smith" was a short story by Brereton, published in the Australian Magazine, April 1899.
