Autograph manuscript. 13pp.
Written on the reverse of sheets from the Library catalogue. Unsigned by the author but A.G.S. preparing the essay for publication in the Bulletin, 21 October 1899, added Brennan's name at the end, in pencil.
This text varies in detail from that printed in Prose, 1962. One line, written by Brennan as "his casque burdened with an obscene fowl", has been printed to read "obscure fowl". A poem of 8 lines in the manuscript has been cancelled through by the author and is omitted. There are many emendations by the author. At the end is memo to A.G.S. "Have you Vielé Griffin's Phocas le Jardinière? I haven't - he's my next article."
Accompanying is short autograph note to A.G.S. "Never had a Hérédia. But that's no reason why you shouldn't be obliged. Don't let any see this copy while you have it - I don't know whether I'd be hanged, drawn and quartered, or not. Sorry I missed you t'other day, I had it waiting for you then, C.B."*
In half-leather binding, together with autograph manuscript by Mary Gilmore: a translation of de Régnier's poem, "Autumn Twilight".
