"Rude Remarks and Passing Nods"
Autograph manuscript. 8pp, 4to.
A humorous article satirizing the work of a number of Australia's accepted poets. Brereton does not mention them by name but he parodies their poetry in such manner, that their identity is unmistakeable. Henry Lawson is cruelly lampooned, and "Banjo" Paterson receives some rough treatment. Brennan must surely be the offender in Brereton's reference to the "Obscure Sonority....it is not native to this country but is becoming acclimatized. Of course it shows a fine sense of sound, and it may be a test of skill in versification; but I do not understand it. It's grasp of thought is too strenuous, it's imaginative insight too piercing. It treads the black abyss of vacuity with no uncertain step, and wrapped in flowing robes of solemn diction, sweeps on to the outposts of the Never Was". Then follow lines which are a parody of Brennan.
In half-leather folder, together with other manuscripts by Brereton.
