Chris: Brennan to A.G. Stephens

Component identifier:
Item 86
Content Summary:

A small collection of typed copies of letters written between 1897-1927. A.G.S. was often compelled to sell his letters but he usually made copies of those which were significant. It is from these that the transcripts have been made. There are 38 letters; they are in varying length, some being long, others merely short friendly notes. In quarter-leather album.

Inserted is autograph letter-card from Brennan to A.G.S., 2.3.1900. "Dear Mr Stephens, 'Twas neither pride nor dignity: 'twas laziness. I had not budged - but your expiatory gift is thankfully received. I'm on with you in your plan. But I. will one be occasionally excused? 2. is Saturday the only available (-of) -by-the-majority night? Saturday-Sunday is just my good time - not that I always make use of it. O'Reilly I have seen; he will be happy to join. Brereton not seen; I don't know. He is a shy bird: I can't always get him with dinner, drink, and smoke free (not to mention other attractions...!) and he's got no cash and - a girl, Yours C.B."

Evidently a letter in reply to one by A.G.S. suggesting the formation of some regular meeting of literary personalities.

Note. Apropos of Brennan's opinion of A.G's literary ability, this collection contains copy of letter, 19 February 1920: Brennan begins: "Dear A.G.S. Charming - but I wish I could handle English prose as you do..."
