Content Summary:

A Brennan Bookplate: "Ex Libris Harry Chaplin" 1950

Quarter-leather binder containing: Original etching of Chris: Brennan, in profile. Signed artist's proofs, in two states. Preliminary sketch for the bookplate, with the final design.

Set of progress proofs, showing the progressive working on the etched plate, with variations in the design, making in all, four different states of the finished bookplate.

Inscription on the end paper: "When Chris wished me to make a portrait of him for the 'Poems' I made this plate, but thought it wouldn't wear an edition, and it lay in my studio sleeping, till you, my dear Harry awakened it for a bookplate. It was a pleasure to make it for you. Lionel Lindsay".

This bookplate, one of two Brennan plates made by the artist for me, originated in a suggestion that the profile etching would be an ideal basis for a bookplate. The artist in a letter replied: "It would make a rather remarkable bookplate and is a good portrait". This was written in reply to my letter sending a tentative design. Four letters from the artist are included in the folder.
