Chris: Brennan An Etched Portrait, 1914

Component identifier:
Item 90
Content Summary:

A set of progress proofs. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and final states of the etching. The finished copper plate (which is in my collection) is signed: "Lionel Lindsay. Etched about 1914". The portrait is reproduced as frontispiece to this book.

In quarter-leather binder together with long series of manuscript notes by the artist. The script is of 5pp. 4to.

Other letters included are from Gerald Collier, and Meredith Atkinson, both written during the 1914-1918 War with references to the conflict. Also letters to Brereton from F. Sinclaire, editor of Melbourne Socialist and Fellowship. Sinclaire was in trouble during the War for making inflammatory speeches and was before the court for certain of his remarks.

One interesting item included in this folder is autograph poem written by Brereton during the South African War. It is not at all pacific in tone, and makes savage references to the Boers, and "Lying Botha and blood-stained De Wet", also containing exhortations to "smite the foes of Empire hip and thigh".

Other letters and photographs of relevance are included.
