- In 1979 the Australian Government announced the setting up of an inquiry into the Christmas Island phosphate industry. It was to be conducted by Mr W.W.Sweetland, a former executive manager of BHP's Minerals Division and General Manager of Shipping. The terms of reference of the inquiry included the mining life of the island and wage levels. This series contains a number of submissions to the inquiry including one from CIPSOA and a report to members of the Association on the inquiry. Other submissions are from the ACTU, the National Farmers Federation and the Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service. There is also material relating to viability after the inquiry.
