Research Material Volume 18

Component identifier:
Series
Content Summary:

Note: This volume deals (a) with the general history of the Banabans of Ocean Island since the discovery of the phosphate deposits, and with the ambivalent relationship between them and the 'exploiters'. On the one hand there was a mutual familial affection and on the other a feeling among the Banabans that they had never been given a fair deal.

During WW2 most of them were removed from the island by the Japanese, and in 1945/1946 were brought back from exile and settled on a more fertile island (Rambi) in the Fiji group.
